Brightening vs. Faking: What Airbnb Allows in Listing Photos

Not legal advice. This explains Airbnb's published host rules as of Oct 23, 2026. Airbnb can change its policies, so check the help articles linked here.

Does Airbnb ban brightening or enhancing listing photos?

No. No Airbnb page we found bans brightening or enhancement outright. What Airbnb bans is editing that hides flaws or damage, adds amenities, or misrepresents the listing.

The rule is in Airbnb help article 2895, the ground rules for hosts, under "Listing accuracy":

"the photos and description on the listing page should accurately represent the space provided (with some minor differences allowed for hotel-like representative inventory). Any content that misrepresents the listing or misleads guests violates this policy. We will ask hosts to remove content if AI or other digital technology has been used to edit flaws, hide damage, add amenities or attributes that are not part of a listing, or otherwise misrepresent the listing."

What counts as faking a listing photo?

Faking is any edit that changes what a guest will find. Going by the 2895 wording, that includes erasing stains or cracks, hiding damage, adding a pool, fireplace or view that isn't there, and changing what a room contains.

Airbnb's help center also says, on its photo shoots page, that it doesn't accept "photos that use angles or processing techniques that make your place appear different from how it looks in person."

What counts as honest brightening?

Honest brightening corrects the camera, not the room. Fixing exposure, white balance and color so a room looks the way it does in person doesn't edit flaws, hide damage or add amenities. That's our reading of the policy; Airbnb doesn't publish a list of approved edits.

A simple test: if a guest walks in and the room matches the photo, the edit is honest.

How do I brighten my photos in one afternoon?

Start from accurate photos and fix only light and color. A workable afternoon looks like this:

  1. Pick the photos guests see first.
  2. Correct exposure and white balance so walls and linens look like they do in person.
  3. Don't remove, add or move anything in the frame.
  4. Compare each edited photo to the room itself before you upload it.

You can do this by hand, or use photo enhancer software for enhanced listing photos. BNB Boost is photo enhancer software that fixes light and color without changing the room. If you have a professional shoot, start there: a photographer's composition and lighting are the strongest base, and light and color fixes help most when you add seasonal photos or want a consistent look across listings.

What happens if Airbnb decides my photos are misleading?

Airbnb can make you remove them, and repeat problems can cost you the listing. Article 2895 describes "requiring hosts to remove content that misrepresents the listing or misleads guests." It adds: "When repeated or severe violations of these ground rules are reported, hosts, co-hosts, or listings may be suspended or removed from the platform, hosts may be prevented from publishing new listings or lose their Superhost status".

FAQ

Can I edit my Airbnb listing photos?

Yes, as long as the photos still accurately represent the space guests will get. Airbnb's ground rules for hosts say "the photos and description on the listing page should accurately represent the space provided" and "Any content that misrepresents the listing or misleads guests violates this policy." Source: Airbnb help article 2895, Listing accuracy.

What photo edits does Airbnb not allow?

Airbnb says: "We will ask hosts to remove content if AI or other digital technology has been used to edit flaws, hide damage, add amenities or attributes that are not part of a listing, or otherwise misrepresent the listing." Our reading: in practice that rules out erasing stains or cracks, adding a pool, fireplace or view that isn't there, and changing what a room contains.

Is brightening or color correcting Airbnb photos allowed?

Airbnb doesn't publish a list of approved edits, but its policy targets edits that hide flaws, hide damage, add amenities, or misrepresent the listing. Correcting exposure, white balance and color so a room looks the way it does in person generally doesn't do any of those things. A simple test: if a guest walks in and the room matches the photo, the edit is honest.

Is it misleading to use AI on Airbnb photos?

It depends on what the edit does, not the tool. Airbnb's wording covers "AI or other digital technology" equally, and the line is whether the edit misrepresents the listing.

What happens if Airbnb thinks my photos are misleading?

Airbnb says actions "may include educating hosts about this policy, issuing warnings, and requiring hosts to remove content that misrepresents the listing or misleads guests." It adds: "When repeated or severe violations of these ground rules are reported, hosts, co-hosts, or listings may be suspended or removed from the platform, hosts may be prevented from publishing new listings or lose their Superhost status". Hosts "may appeal decisions under this policy by contacting us directly or through the link provided to start the appeals process."

Do Airbnb guests rate photo accuracy?

Yes. Accuracy is one of Airbnb's star-rating categories, described as: "Was it accurately represented with up-to-date photos and info? Was everything in good working condition?" (help article 1257). The host ground rules add: "Repeated low ratings indicate that a listing or host may not be meeting guest expectations of quality". Airbnb asks guests with a problem to communicate with the host first, and "If the host can't resolve the issue, contact us to report the issue directly or request a refund through the Resolution Center."

What does BNB Boost change in a listing photo?

BNB Boost is photo enhancer software for Airbnb listing photos that fixes light and color without changing the room. It doesn't add or remove objects. It was built by Steven Young, an Airbnb host since 2012 with 53 listings and a working photographer with STAK photography since 2008.

Should I still hire a professional photographer?

A professional shoot is a strong starting point, and enhancement software doesn't replace a photographer's composition and lighting. Light and color fixes are useful later, when you add seasonal photos or need a consistent look across listings.
